Hunter Valley is located in New South Wales, Australia, about 2 hours away from Sydney. Hunter Valley is an area of wineries, mountains and historic towns.

The Hunter Valley extends about 150 kms and stretches inland from Newcastle through the towns of Maitland, Singleton and to the Upper Hunter. Located in the Wine Country are the wineries, national parks, and the lakes.

The Hunter Valley Wineries is the oldest and one of the most renowed wine producing region in Australia. It is only a 2 hour drive from Sydney and it has become a thriving tourist district.

Not only known as the most renowed wine producing region it also has a few thriving towns and cities. Hunter Valley also has plenty of sleepy little villages and hidden vineyards off the beaten track that are just waiting to be explored.

The Hunter River was first discovered in the 1700s by European settlers . The river takes its name from John Hunter who was the Governor of the New South Wales colony at the time of discovery. The discovery of coal quickly led the Hunter Valley to become an important settlement, with coal mining providing work and revenue and attracting more settlers and industry. It remains a major coal producing area to this day.

Getting to the Hunter Valley is easy...

The Great North Road was the first major link between Sydney and the Hunter Valley region. It stretches for just over 260 kilometers and was built by convicts in the early 1800s. Although parts of it have fallen into disrepair over the ensuing years, it is still used. If you don't have your own transport, it is possible to take a one-day tour from Sydney or book a coach for a single or return trip.

Some of the major Hunter Valley attractions are the vineyards. Many world famous wine producers are based in the region and most of the larger vineyards (and also many smaller ones) offer tours and wine tastings.
